Tony Mastro

Storm Team 12 Chief Meteorologist

Tony's weather career began in 1985. "Hurricane Gloria hit the coast of Rhode Island where I grew up. CB radios were the craze. There was a CB antenna on the roof that the hurricane took off the roof and planted in the neighbor's house sideways...I was hooked!"

Tony's CB handle was Ghost Rider, after the Marvel Comics character from when he collected comic books.

Tony received his Bachelor of Science Degree and minor in math from Lyndon State College in Vermont. This was followed up with his Television Seal of Approval from the American Meteorological Society - out of 10,000 members of the AMS, only 900 have earned the seal.

Tony's father played in the Marine Drum and Bugle Corps...so we owe Tony's love of Jazz to good ole dad. Tony played in a 30-piece swing band in high school (swing is his favorite), competed and toured in the Drum Corps International, and plays just about every brass instrument. "Well, the trumpet, mostly...I was born in the wrong era...should have been the late '30s and '40s."

Tony loves to cook Italian! His forte? Cacciatore. His secret? Lot's o' garlic! Tony also clued us in on a couple of things: Italians call spaghetti "pasta," and jarred sauce is outlawed in his family...Tony makes his own. So, what makes a dish tasty? Garlic, oregano, parsley.

Tony's a Star Trek fan (he owns all the movies) and he likes them all but he says, "I love the original for what it did...for how it broke down stereotypes." He also likes how the new versions have continued to do the same.

This weather guy is also a swimmer! "I'm the only person I know who goes backward when I do the freestyle kick." Tony was also on his high school swim team ("breast stroke, not freestyle").
