Boxing with Opioids Event Took Place in Jackson

JACKSON MS (WJTV) -

Health providers within the state attended a conference Wednesday aimed at combating the opioid epidemic in Mississippi.

Rashad N. Ali, a surgeon at Family Health Center in Mississippi said " Mississippi is one of three states in the United States that rank very high in prescription reception as well as opioid addiction.

Ali said since health providers have the pen to write, it is important for prescribers to understand state laws restrictions and programs in aiding Mississippi residents.

"We have something in Mississippi called the Prescription Monitoring Program it allows a prescribed to look at people who have the potential of becoming addicted or receiving more than one prescription so it allows them to see people who are at risk of becoming addicted," said Ali.

Just last year there were more than 220 opioid related deaths in Mississippi.

Janice Sherman the CEO of Primary Health Care Association believed informing health providers of statistics and laws would help reduce the number of people addicted to opioids within the state.

Sherman said, "Providers like i said, they are on the front line. They are not only having to deal with this issue but there is a myriad of other issues. So when you give them an opportunity to get the resources they need to deal with something such as an epidemic because this has become an epidemic in the nation as well as the state. It arms them with resources so that they can do their jobs better."
