Jackson residents seek demolition of neglected homes

JACKSON, Miss (WJTV) - Neighbors off Capital Street in North West Jackson said they've been trying for years to get abandoned homes torn down.

"Just look at it, it looks terrible."

A Jackson resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, said she's been living to the decaying home for years.

"I just want to see if somebody can remove this house because it's a hazard to my property and makes my property go down," the resident said.

The resident said crumbling homes are seen far to often in their community.

Commander Jaye Coleman with community improvement within the Jackson Police
Department says the city wants these homes torn down as well.

He said it's a crime deterrent.

"If we're able to demolish these houses, you may save a kid from going in and illegal activities in these houses if we demolish them and keep the lots clean," said Commander Coleman.

If you see an abandoned home in your neighborhood, call 601-960-1054.
