Laurel councilman prepares for Summer of Service

LAUREL, Miss.(WHLT) - Summer of Service will keep children busy in Laurel this summer.

Councilman Jason Capers is getting ready to host Summer of Service for the second year.

Children of all ages can meet at Laurel Middle School every Friday, at 9 a.m., but anyone under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult or guardian.

The goal of the summer program is to help children explore the wide variety of service needed in their communities.

"We just want people to understand our young people are our future leaders of our community, especially that a positive action equals a positive reward," said Councilman Jason Capers. "We really have to get people in our communities caring and serving one another again. I think this is a great way to get that moving in our next generation."

Kids will help clean up streets, lots and even build a wheelchair ramp for a person in need.

At the end of the program, Capers says the children will take a trip for all of their hard work over the summer.
