Mike Espy, Jason Shelton qualify to run for U.S. Senate

JACKSON, Miss (WJTV) - Former Mississippi Congressman Mike Espy and Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton filed qualifying papers with the Mississippi Secretary of State's office Wednesday.

Both are officially running for the Senate seat vacated by former U.S. Senator Thad Cochran.

There are three years left in Cochran's term.

To qualify a candidate must submit a statement of intent and petition with a thousand signatures verified by a county circuit clerk and paying a $1,000 fee to the Mississippi Secretary of State's office.

Espy is the first in the field of candidates to qualify for the race. Shelton filed just a few hours later.

April 24th is the last day to qualify.
