Safety Questions About Adams Prison

By Ross Adams

There are questions about safety for Corrections Corporation of America, the company that operates a private federal Adams county prison, which was the site of a weekend riot by inmates that left one  correctional officer dead and several others injured.

CCA based in Nashville, Tennessee. According to its website it runs 60 prisons across the country. The company owns 44 of them including the one in Adams County. There are about 75,000 inmates or detainees housed at these facilities.

Some criticize the for-profit company saying CCA puts the bottom line ahead of its own employees.

24-year old Catlin Carithers was killed in yesterday's riot. Authorities say inmates beat him to death on the roof of one of the buildings.

He’d been working at the facility since 2009.

We called and e-mailed CCA to get their side of the accusations. So far they have not responded.

Adams County Sheriff Mayfield says his office will work with the company on the investigation into the riot.
