Congressman Bennie Thompson is asking the FBI to review the murder of Marco McMillian--the openly gay mayoral candidate in Clarksdale.
He wants to know if any federal laws were violated.
Thompson represents the district in Coahoma County where McMillian was running.
He says he has confidence in the sheriff investigating the death, but wants the FBI involved because that's what McMillian's family wants.
Thompson calls the violence of the murder "unconscionable."
The family says the coroner told them McMillian was beaten and burned.
22-year-old Lawrence Reed is charged with McMillian's murder.
Authorities say they can neither confirm nor deny this was a hate crime and are still investigating Reed's relationship with McMillian.
Authorities say they found McMillian's SUV the day before they found his body and Reed was behind the wheel.
That's when he reportedly admitted to a deputy that he killed someone.
