Senator Cochran Votes To Defund Affordable Care Act

Washington DC -

U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) today pointed to the increasing economic costs related to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) to support his vote to defund implementation of the controversial and unpopular health care law.

Cochran voted for an amendment offered by Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) that would prohibit funds in the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act of 2013 (HR.933) from being used to fulfill the ACA, which is scheduled to be fully implemented in January 2014.  The amendment failed, 45-52, with the vote falling along party lines.

"I regret that this amendment was not adopted.  It is becoming increasingly evident that the Affordable Care Act is neither affordable nor protective of the health care most Americans want," Cochran said.

"The costs of this law consistently exceed all the rosy projections that were made when it was enacted or since. It is time to stop the health care changes that the President and congressional Democrats forced on the American people and work toward the sort of true reforms that will actually improve health care without the mandates, tax increases or excessive costs," he said.

Cochran argued against passage of the ACA in early 2010 and has since cosponsored a series of bills and amendments to overturn the law, including Cruz's ObamaCare Repeal Act (S.117).

The March 6 issue of the Federal Reserve's so-called beige book (http://bloom.bg/Z0f24G) indicated that President Obama's health care reform law is hindering hiring and resulting in employee layoffs.
