Police Chief John Haynes and his family were heading back from vacation when their charter bus caught on fire.
The family was heading back from a 4-day Carnival Cruise trip to the Bahamas. On Thursday, the family, and several other passengers, boarded a charter bus in Orlando to head back to Durant.
Passengers say as they were going through Baldwin County, Alabama Thursday evening, they heard a tire blow. Passengers then saw flames and got off the bus. Within five minutes, the entire bus was engulfed in flames. No one was hurt.
Haynes says he and others were able to grab some of the luggage below the bus, but many carry-on items didn't make it. A second bus came and got the passengers, and they pulled into Holmes County Friday morning, nearly 6 hours behind schedule.
Haynes says his family will seek compensation for things lost in the fire. He says despite the fire, the vacation, itself, was fine.
We called Alabama officials to get the name of the bus company. However, our calls were not returned.
