Vicksburg Main Street invites the public to attend a Spaghetti Lunch and Silent Auction at Lillian's, 1306 Washington Street, with proceeds benefiting downtown businesses affected by the March 14th fire. The lunch will be from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm on Wednesday April 3rd.
On Thursday March 14th the landscape of downtown Vicksburg was forever changed by the fire in the 1400 block of Washington Street. Not only has one of our historical buildings suffered extensive damage but our businesses and residents have been affected by it too. Because of this, two businesses have had to close temporarily and one is completely destroyed.
As a downtown area, our independently owned "mom and pop" shops are what make us unique. Plus we understand the time, money, and commitment you make to our downtown area when you choose to open up your doors and throw out the welcome mat. It hits particularly close to home when these three businesses have been affected so horribly by this tragedy.
One business in particular, El Rio, suffered a total loss in the fire. It was more than just a restaurant - it was the dream of Priscilla and Lorenzo Martinez, a young family who invested in our downtown landscape. As any business owner will tell you sometimes you must choose between what you will pay each month in order to keep your doors open. Unfortunately for Priscilla and Lorenzo they did not have insurance to cover their losses.
Despite all of this they are willing to re-open in another location in our downtown area but it will take money and time. Priscilla is currently pregnant and Lorenzo is working side jobs to make ends meet, however they both feel confident that they will be able to re-open their restaurant. This also doesn't mean the existing bills from their business will go away. They will need money to cover these things as well. The same rings true for our other businesses whom have lost sales and stock from having to be closed.
They need our help - we want our businesses to succeed on Main Street and as a community now is the time to come together. Please join us in helping to raise money for this couple and our other businesses that were affected by the fire. Together we can change the fabric of our downtown - what once was a tragedy on our picturesque street will turn into a distant memory and hopefully passed the ashes of the building will stand another prosperous business along the bricks of Washington Street. We can make a difference together.
The Spaghetti Lunch and Silent Auction is one step the community can take to aid these businesses. Dine- in, carry out or delivery for 10 or more is available. Tickets will be $10.00 for a plate lunch and will be sold at Paper Plus, 1318 Washington Street, and the Main Street office, 1010 Levee Street Suite 3A.
Thank you for your support and please continue to support our businesses at this time that are open for business on Washington Street.
