Vicksburg National Military Park to cut budget, operations

Vicksburg, MS -

A major Vicksburg tourist attraction will soon see several changes thanks to the federal government.

The nation's national parks are feeling the effects of the automatic spending cuts known as the Sequester.

Vicksburg's National Military Park is required to reduce its $3 million budget by 5 percent.

So for the rest of this year, they'll have $150,000 less for operations.

Park officials say they will leave 6 jobs vacant.

They will stay on their shorter, winter hours all year.

Trash will be collected every two days instead of everyday.

The park's tour road and museum will close at 5:00pm through the end of the year.
