From VDOT: All southbound lanes of Interstate 77 in Virginia are now open.

11:53 PM UPDATE:

From Erin Barnett: Southbound lanes of Interstate 77 are still closed. At last check, all the vehicles had been cleared and crews were working to clean up glass and debris from the road.

8:27 p.m. update:

All southbound lanes of Interstate 77 in Carroll County, Va. at mile marker 6, just north of the North Carolina border, remain closed as accident responders continue to work on cleaning up after a multiple vehicle accident.  All northbound lanes of I-77 are now open.  

State Police hope to have the scene cleared in the southbound lanes around 9 p.m. Sunday night.

6:00 p.m. update:

State police fog is to blame for the crash. They say 95 vehicles are involved in 17 different accidents. Some cars still stuck under tractor trailers but tow trucks are having trouble because of the terrain.

4:40 p.m. update:

Ken Heineck reports one lane of Interstate 77 northbound has been reopened. State police says the southbound lanes will be closed for another 3-4 hours.

4:30 p.m. update from VDOT:

An accident involving approximately 75 vehicles has closed all lanes of southbound Interstate 77 at mile marker 6 in Carroll County, Va.  All northbound lanes of I-77 are also closed due to accident responders using these lanes to access the crash location.  The accident location is just north of the North Carolina border in the Fancy Gap area.

No estimated time for reopening I-77 has been established at this time.  Drivers are encourage to seek alternate routes and avoid I-77 at the North Carolina border.

3:20 p.m. update

Ken Heineck reports three people are dead and more than 25 injured and taken to area hospitals. Police say fog is to blame. 75 vehicles involved.

Police don't know when the interstate will be cleared.

Galax Police confirm there is a 50 vehicle wreck on I-77 with possible fatalities. Both North and South lanes blocked from Exit 1 to Exit 14. Avoid area. Keep emergency lanes open so responders can move. Stay in vehicles with seatbelts on! Call 911 for emergencies ONLY.
