City officials react to shooting death of officer

City officials are learning more details about what happened inside Jackson Police Headquarters Thursday Afternoon. And what they know, hurts them.

"Based on what I've heard, of course, we're sorry. Extremely sorry about what's happened in this situation," says City Council President Tony Yarber. "It's something that nobody wants to have to deal with."

Jackson's mayor was also on the scene. Mayor Harvey Johnson shares his condolences with the victim, his family, and the people of Jackson.

"This is indeed a sad day for our city," says the Mayor. "It's a sad day for the Jackson Police Department. Our hearts go out to the Smith family. Detective Smith was an excellent officer. From recent reports, he'd just been recognized as one of Jackson's best."

According to Jackson Police, two individuals were fatally shot. 40-year-old Eric Smith, a JPD detective and 23-year-old Jeremy Powel, a suspect in a recent homicide. Both men died of gunshot wounds.

According to their preliminary investigation, Powel was being arrested for the murder of Christopher Alexander, which happened Monday.

Smith has been a Jackson Police Officer since 1995. He was assigned to the Robbery and Homicide Division.
