Pearl Officer Recalls Detective's Killing One Year Later

     New information about last week's shooting death of Jackson detective Eric smith.

     The coroner says Jeremy Powell shot himself twice after he fired at least four shots at the officer.

     Meantime, Jackson police are conducting an investigation into the incident, which happened at police headquarters last Thursday.

     The internal affairs division is examining whether any policies or procedures were violated.

     Investigators tell us Powell wrestled Smith's gun from him while the officer was questioning him in a third floor room.  

     Next month marks the first anniversary since Pearl police detective Mike Walter was shot at killed as he tried to serve a warrant on a suspect hiding inside an apartment. 

     Pearl detective sgt. Archie Bennett was the supervising officer on the scene when that tragedy occurred.

     Bennett says he quickly rushed to JPD as soon as he heard about Smith's shooting.

     "I work for Pearl and that's Jackson…but when an officer's down, there's no boundaries. So I thought anything I could do to get over there and help that's what I wanted to do," said Bennett.

     Smith's funeral will be held Saturday at 11 am on the Jackson state campus.   

     The Smith Family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Eric T. Smith Charity Fund that has been set up through Trustmark National Bank. 

     Citizens may also make donations to the Jackson Police Department's Youth Police Athletic League (PAL), through the Jackson Police Foundation Inc., Post Office Box 80, Jackson, MS 39205, noting:  In Memory of Eric Smith for Youth Police Athletic League. 

     The PAL program is a youth crime prevention program that relies on education, athletic and other recreational activities creating bonds between police officers and the youth in our community.
