WJTV News Channel 12 - Hokies Defense Superior This Spring

Hokies Defense Superior This Spring

Posted: Updated:

While the Hokies offense is working to learn a new system under a new set of coaches, the Hokies defense returns almost intact this year. For that reason they are expected to dominate in the early going--and they are doing just that. Coach Bud Foster's group was superior in just about all phases of the Hokies first open scrimmage.

The numbers are rather staggering. The defense recorded ten sacks, although they aren't the full contact kind on the quarterbacks. They added 11 more tackles for loss to those ten, for a total of 21 in the scrimmage. Toss in a pair of interceptions and a forced fumble, and you have a pretty impressive performance.

Coach Frank Beamer explained that the defense should be ahead with all their experienced starters returning. (nine of eleven return, although one of those, Antone Exum, is injured). Defensive Coordinator Bud Foster liked the effort and said the disruptions and turnovers are part of that, and they were nice to see. Defensive End James Gayle had 3.5 sacks, but was low key afterwards, saying it was a good starting point but the unit still has a lot of work to do.
