NC House to roll out own education overhaul bill

RALEIGH, N.C. -

North Carolina Republican senators are moving ahead with legislation that would end tenure for veteran public school teachers even as House members on both sides of the aisle plan to unveil their own proposed education reforms.

The Senate Education Committee scheduled debate Wednesday morning on the bill promoted by chamber leader Phil Berger. The House members planned to release details of their legislation a few hours later.

The Senate bill would replace the job protections teachers have received after four years in the same district. Berger says tenure discourages excellence in the classroom. Teachers would instead be offered contracts of 1 to four years. Berger also wants to move forward on a merit-pay program for teachers.

House leaders wouldn't go along with the Senate last year on ending tenure.
