Judge mulling if NC couple will be tried together

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

A judge is reconsidering if a man and wife charged in the death of a Kinston woman will be tried together.

Judge Donald Stephens expressed concern Thursday after an attorney for Amanda Hayes said Grant Ruffin Hayes III sent her client a threatening letter from jail.

Attorneys for both defendants didn't initially object to a joint trial but reserved the right to request that the cases be separated.

The Hayeses are charged with first-degree murder in the death of 27-year-old Laura Ackerson, who had two children with Grant Hayes.

Parts of Ackerson's body were found in 2011 in a creek in Fort Bend County, Texas. Investigators have said they think Ackerson was slain in North Carolina before her killers hauled her dismembered body in coolers to Texas for disposal.
