The 1 Campus 1 Community Center for Engaged Learning and Living at Millsaps College is joining with Midtown community partners to offer a health fair as part of the seventh annual Block Party that is scheduled April 12 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on the West Street lawn of the Millsaps campus.
Since 2006, Millsaps College and the Midtown neighborhood have come together for the 1 Campus 1 Community Block Party, which is a celebration of community through food, games, music, dancing, sports, art and informative activities.
This year, the University of Mississippi School of Nursing and the UNCARE Health Clinic in the Midtown neighborhood of Jackson will offer BMI measurements and take blood pressure readings. The School of Dental Hygiene at UMC will provide information about good dental habits, free toothbrushes and toothpaste and offer interactive games.
Members of the Millsaps College Pre-Health Society, Alpha Epsilon Delta, will volunteer their time and offer blood sugar testing and provide information about health eating. The Mississippi Roadmap to Health Equity and FoodCorps will also offer health eating activities.
The Greater Jackson YMCA will participate and advertise opportunities available at its fitness centers.
The Mississippi Museum of Natural Science and the Mississippi Children's Museum will also provide activities for families.
The focus this year will be on games and activities for children ages five and under, which is in keeping with the work of Excel by 5 that focuses on early childhood education to ensure that children are ready for kindergarten.
