Schools reaping rewards of restaurant leftovers

Posted: Updated:

A local school district is reaping the benefits of restaurant leftovers.
At the start of the academic year, Pitt County Schools partnered with Green Circle N.C. to turn used cooking oil into cash for schools.

That partnership is now paying off. More than 100 local businesses have donated their used grease to Green Circle, which then converts it into a product they sell to biodiesel companies.
The company then splits the money with Pitt County Schools.

This is the first year the school system joined the program.
So far, four schools received checks from this program.
