UPDATE 4:00 P.M. SATURDAY
We've received an update from prison management.
The prison's Public Information Officer, Angela Smith, tells us the facility is currently on lock down, meaning all inmates are restricted to their housing units with escorted movement only in the facility.
They say around 10:00 Saturday morning, workers responded to simultaneous incidents of inmates fighting one another in multiple housing areas. Staff responded immediately to contain the disturbance. They tell us by 12:10 Saturday afternoon the incident was resolved and all inmates were back in their housing areas.
The facility's trained emergency response team was activated. Officials with the Mississippi Department of Corrections and local law enforcement are also on-site.
Smith tells us at no time was public safety at risk.
One inmate died in the incident. No word yet on how that inmate died. Nine others have been transported to off-site hospitals. Additional inmates are being treated on-site. There were no injuries to staff.
Prison management did not use the term "riot" to describe this incident.
At this hour, we have a crew on the scene of an on-going prison riot in Wilkinson County at the Wilkinson County Correctional Facility. It's located in the town of Woodville at 2999 U.S. Highway 61 North.
Coroner Travis Sharp confirms to us one person has died in the riot--it's not clear if that person is an inmate or a guard.
Our crew has watched several emergency helicopters and ambulances leave the facility.
The Wilkinson County Correctional Facility is owned by Corrections Corporation of America--the same company that owns the Adams County Correctional Center. In 2012, there was a riot at the Adams County facility. One prison guard was killed in that incident.
We're waiting to interview the facility's Public Information Officer and will bring you the latest as it becomes available.
