MOBILE, AL (M-Braves Staff) – The Mississippi Braves took down the Mobile BayBears 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Hank Aaron Stadium, earning their sixth win in a row behind a great outing by starter JR Graham.
Graham (1-1) pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just four hits and not allowing a walk. At one point he retired 15 straight, including seven straight ground outs, en route to picking up his first win of the season.
It was also the first win by a Braves starter this year, ending a stretch of 16 games without a win for a starter, one game shy of the franchise record.
Mississippi (9-8) jumped on BayBears' starter David Holmberg early when Phil Gosselin doubled to start the game and scored two batters later on a Jose Martinez RBI single. Holmberg settled in and the game stayed 1-0 for seven innings.
Holmberg (0-2) took the loss for Mobile (8-9) but only allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits over eight frames. Kevin Munson also allowed a run in relief on one hit.
The Braves extended their lead to 2-0 in the eighth when Gosselin led off with a single. Dan Brewer tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt, but a Holmberg throwing error to first put men on the corners with nobody out. Martinez grounded into a double play, scoring Gosselin from third to double the Braves' lead.
Mobile's lone threat of the day came in the eighth, as it took an out each from Erik Hamren, Chasen Shreve and Mark Lamm to get through the frame. Hamren gave up a run on three hits over his one-third of an inning, pulling the BayBears to within a run. Lamm, though, struck out Nick Evans to strand men in scoring position in the eighth and keep the Braves' lead.
Mississippi posted an insurance run in the ninth when Shawn McGill doubled, plating Salcedo to make it 3-1.
Lamm worked a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out David Nick to end the game for his first save of the season.
Mississippi has now won six in a row, their longest win streak since July of 2010 when they won seven straight from July 4 to July 10.
The Braves try to make it seven straight on Monday night at 7:05 PM CT in game three of the five-game series with Mobile. Left-hander Alex Wood (0-1, 1.13 ERA) squares off against right-hander Zeke Spruill (0-3, 1.93).
