RALEIGH, N.C. -

Three years after releasing his sophomore LP, The Love Language's Stuart McLamb is finally set to drop his third album.

The Love Language will release "Ruby Red" July 23 through Merge Records, the band announced Monday.

In October, McLamb explained that getting the album exactly the way he wanted it had been a painful process that began in February 2012.

McLamb explained that he set out to record the album in February at the band's rehearsal space in Raleigh. There, he tracked the bulk of the LP with BJ Burton before hitting the road again, including SXSW in Austin.

"It was one of the best -- if not the best -- times I've ever had creating music in my entire life," McLamb recalled. "A full-throttle, ever-momentous race to our self-imposed finish line of March 1."

After several failed attempts, McLamb and Burton relocated to Black Mountain, N.C., to work on the album. There, "Songs were scrawled with lungs full of mountain air, colored with spilled wine, and seasoned with the drawbars of a thrift store organ and tape echo."

It was after the album was recorded that McLamb said he ran into problems. "The remainder of the year has basically been spent trying to get the mix right. That's insane, I know; it's probably mostly my fault, honestly."

"I truly am excited about this record, but I wasn't ready to put it out as it was," he said.

The finished product, named for the band's windowless rehearsal space, features more than 20 musicians and "produces new standards for the Carolina pop songbook."

"[The album finds] The Love Language as an extroverted community art project made by responsible citizens of a loosely packed scene who know that McLamb will match whatever they contribute," the label explains in a press release.

"Ruby Red" is the follow-up to 2010's "Libraries" and 2009's self-titled debut. The album's artwork is a collage by Raleigh photographer Tim Lytvinenko, and prominently features a profile of Carolina Ballet dancer Lara O'Brien.
