Senate seeks to redraw Wake school board districts

Posted: Updated:

An effort by some Wake County Republican lawmakers to change how leaders of North Carolina's largest school system are elected has been approved by the Senate following Democratic accusations the redistricting is partisan.
The Senate voted 33-17 Monday to redraw lines for the nine-member Wake County school board and move its elections from odd-numbered to even-numbered years in 2016. Voters now only elect their district's representative. The bill would turn two seats into regional posts elected by half the county.
GOP Sen. Neal Hunt of Raleigh says the change would increase voter turnout and give citizens more say in elections. Democratic Sen. Josh Stein says the redistricting is politically and racially polarizing and would rip open again wounds of the board's partisan infighting.
The bill now goes to the House.
