Video shows woman struck by car in downtown Johnson City

JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) -

A woman was struck by an oncoming car while crossing the street and now some people are asking for changes to be made at the unsafe intersection.

It happened at the stretch of State of Franklin road in downtown Johnson City, between Spring Street and South Roan Street.

There is a crosswalk and caution lights, but that wasn't enough to prevent a pedestrian from being hit by a car Thursday night.

"We had a pedestrian starting to cross the State of Franklin at Spring Street at the crosswalk when a vehicle struck her," said Lieutenant. Larry Williams with the Johnson City Police.

Video surveillance from a nearby business shows the car knocking the woman off her feet and sending her flying to a nearby sidewalk.

"People have to be more vigilant in areas where they are likely to encounter pedestrians and certainly the downtown area is one of them," said Lt. Williams.

The woman, who police described as a 23-year-old college student -  walked away.

They hadn't seen this video until we showed it to them Monday.

Lt. Larry Williams told News Channel 11 police view the intersection as safe - as drivers do the right thing.

But some drivers want to changes made here before there's another tragedy.

"I had a good friend of mine hit and killed there, David Hudson. It's been a long time, but something definitely needs to be done," said John Harrigan.

In December of 2007 David Hudson was struck and killed by a drunk driver as he crossed State of Franklin road at Spring street.

"It doesn't shock me. I see it's a busy street and nothing has been done about it and that's why it's still happening," said Harrigan.

ETSU student Elizabeth Dugger says she wishes something could be done to alert drivers to passengers cross the street.

"They could put something out here to make drivers more aware because obviously they were not aware she was crossing," said Dugger.

John Harrigan agrees. Something should change. With the intersections and with the drivers who sometimes plow through it.

"People just speeding up the roads and not paying attention. Just not paying attention period," said Harrigan.
