State Police say the investigation into what the suspicious item was, is still ongoing.

Statement from VMI: 

"The VMI community implemented its emergency procedures when the item was discovered at about 8 a.m.," said Col. Stewart MacInnis, VMI spokesman.  "The procedures work extremely well, and this incident validated our emergency planning."

12:06 p.m.

VMI spokesman Col. Stewart MacInnis says the suspicious item was not an explosive device.  The object looked "out of place" according to Col. MacInnis.

The suspicious item was found in a parking area, in front of the library.

State Police are still investigating.

11:19 a.m.

VMI says the State Police bomb squad used a robot to detonate the suspicious item.

The investigation into what the item was is ongoing.

11:07 a.m.

VMI says a State Police bomb robot has picked up the device, and it will be detonated in a controlled area.

Roads and the sidewalks around the VMI parade ground are closed to walkers.

The military institute says all employees and students are to stay inside.

VMI evacuated Preston Library, Nichols Engineering Building, and portions of Mallory Hall as a precaution.

Police are investigating a suspicious package found on the campus of Virginia Military Institute.

According to a school spokesman, the item was found near the entrance to Preston Library, which is closed.

Some other buildings are being evacuated.

Police are asking people to avoid the area at this time.

    According to Roanoke City Police a shooting suspect is at large after one person was shot on the Roanoke River Greenway near the Ramada Inn on Franklin Road. Police say the victim has non-life threatening injuries. The call came in around 8:55.
