An 8-year-old Picayune boy hit by an SUV last week has died of his injuries.

Jeremy Magri, Picayune assistant police chief, tells The Sun Herald Keanu Malik Carraway died April 18 at Children's Hospital in New Orleans.

Magri says Keanu was riding his bicycle down Palestine Road when he attempted to cross the street and was hit by a Chevy Tahoe driven by 52-year-old Francis Burge.

He says police searched the SUV and found three oxycodone pills in a prescription bottle.

Burge was charged with possession of a controlled substance, driving with an expired license and driving with no insurance.

It was unclear whether Burge has an attorney.
