Mississippi Correctional Officer Files Overtime Lawsuit

Posted: Updated:
Jackson -

A Mississippi corrections officer guard has sued the Department of Corrections' employees for its alleged failure to pay overtime to employees.

The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Jackson on April 11. The MDOC has about three weeks to file a response.

A correctional officer with the state prison system has filed a class action lawsuit against Corrections Commissioner Chris Epps over unpaid overtime wages.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Myia Norwood. It does not say where Norwood worked in the prison system. The Clarion-Ledger reports that its review of MDOC reports show Norwood has accumulated nearly 400 hours of overtime.

Norwood is seeking overtime pay and unspecified damages.

MDOC spokeswoman Grace Fisher said it is department policy not to comment on pending litigation.
