Broyhill's mother 'still reeling' from Jamie Hahn death

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

While a memorial service for Jamie Hahn was held in her hometown of Orangeburg, S.C., workers diligently cleaned the home on Tealwood Place where she was murdered and the mother of the man believed to have stabbed her released a statement on the matter.

In Raleigh, workers with PuroClean were in the house, working with gloves and covered shoes. It was a quiet afternoon on the street, in marked contrast to a week ago when Hahn was stabbed in her home. She died two days later.

Meanwhile, a memorial service was held for the slain political strategist Monday at 3 p.m. in her hometown of Orangeburg, S.C.

Monday afternoon, Kay Broyhill, the mother of Jonathan Broyhill, released a statement.

"Our family is still reeling from the shock of what happened last Monday," she said. "Our hearts are broken for the Kirk-Hahn families and we pray God will bring His peace and comfort to them in their grieving.

"Jon has always had a sweet gentle nature and been loved by all who knows him. We will continue to love him and support him in any way we can."

On Saturday, mourners packed into Pullen Baptist Church in Raleigh for Jamie Hahn's funeral.

Jonathan Broyhill, 31, will be charged with murder once he is released from the hospital.  He is listed in good condition at WakeMed.  Police say he suffered self-inflicted stab wounds.

The Hahns and Broyhill were closely connected to the Democratic Party, and former Congressman Brad Miller had hired Jamie Hahn's firm, Blue Sky Strategies, to help his campaign. Broyhill, who grew up in Lenoir with Jamie Hahn's husband, Nation Hahn, worked for Blue Sky.

Broyhill was also the best man in Jamie and Nation Hahn's wedding.

Jamie Hahn's family is asking that memorial contributions be made to the Hope Center at Pullen Memorial Baptist in Raleigh for the  "Raising Hope Dinner" -- First Baptist Church, 1240 Russell Street, Orangeburg, S.C., 29116; or a charity of one's choice.
