M-Braves Alex Wood Named Southern League Pitcher of the Week

Posted: Updated:

PEARL - Alex Wood was named Southern League Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 22-28. In five starts for the Mississippi Braves this season, Wood is 1-1 with a 0.67 ERA and has not allowed a run in his previous 18.2 innings pitched.

The 22-year-old southpaw's scoreless streak dates back to April 12, his only start to have given up runs this season. Wood's five scoreless frames on April 27 at Huntsville extended his consecutive scoreless innings pitched streak to 18.2 innings, breaking Tommy Hanson's record of 17.2, set August 4-16, 2008.

Wood entered the 2013 season ranked as the sixth-best (MLB.com) and seventh-best (Baseball America) prospect in the Atlanta Braves farm system. He leads the Southern League in ERA, ranks fourth with 31 strikeouts and sits fifth with a 0.89 WHIP. Wood's 10.33 strikeouts per nine innings ratio is second-highest in the league while his 1.67 walks per nine innings ratio is third-lowest.

A native of Charlotte, NC, Wood was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the second round (85th overall) of the 2012 draft out of the University of Georgia. Wood made his professional debut with Low-A Rome. He went 4-3 with a 2.22 ERA in 13 starts last year. Wood was also a non-roster invitee to big league camp this season and made the jump from Low-A to Double-A to start the 2013 season.

With the Georgia Bulldogs, Wood finished his collegiate career with a record of 13-10 and a 3.57 ERA in 32 games, 30 starts (204.1 IP, 180 K, 47 BB). During the 2012 season at Georgia, the redshirt sophomore posted a 2.73 ERA in 16 games, the best by any Georgia starter in 24 seasons (Dave Fleming, 2.08 in 1989).

The Mississippi Braves (13-10) return to Trustmark Park for a five-game homestand against the Tennessee Smokies (13-9) Wednesday, May 1 through Sunday, May 5. Wood is currently slated to pitch Friday, May 3. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Gates open at 6:00 PM. Friday Night Fireworks commence following the game.
