M-Braves Sweep Doubleheader, Finish Road Trip 8-2

Posted: Updated:

HUNTSVILLE, AL – The rain on Sunday may have washed out the game, but it didn't wash out the Mississippi Braves hot streak.  They took both ends of a doubleheader on Monday from the Huntsville Stars by scores of 4-1 and 5-0 at Joe Davis Stadium.

Game one saw a great outing by Gus Schlosser (2-1).  He picked up his second win of the road trip after allowing just a run on four hits in six innings.  Andy Moye (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on five hits over five innings.

The Braves (15-10) and Stars (9-16) swapped runs in the fourth inning before a two-run double for Edward Salcedo in the fifth put Mississippi up 3-1.  Christian Marrero tacked on a solo home run in the seventh, his third, to win 4-1.  Mark Lamm picked up his second save.

Game two was an extra inning pitcher's duel between Cody Martin and Alan Williams.  Martin went four shutout innings striking out five before giving way to Ian Thomas, Pat Egan and Chasen Shreve.  The trio of relievers struck out eight over four innings, including five by Egan in his two frames to pick up his second win.

The game stayed scoreless until the top of the eighth inning when the Braves more than doubled their hit total in the game.  Braeden Schlehuber and Mycal Jones led off with back to back singles before Emerson Landoni bunted one back to Casey Medlen.  He tried to get Schlehuber at third but was off the mark, loading the bases with nobody out.

Shawn McGill pinch hit for the pitcher and ripped a double, plating two and breaking the tie.  A batter later, Dan Brewer had an RBI single, and after Barrett Kleinknecht singled to put two on, Jose Martinez drove both in with a two-run single.  When the dust settled, the Braves had posted five runs on six hits, sending ten men to the plate in the extra frame.

With the sweep, the Braves took four out of five from Huntsville, their third straight series in which they've won four.  Mississippi is now 12-2 in their last 14 games.

The Braves now look ahead to a five-game set with Tennessee Smokies (14-10) beginning Wednesday at 11:00 AM after a league-wide off day on Tuesday.  The Smokies send right-hander Matt Loosen (0-0, 2.08) to the hill.  The Braves have not yet announced a starting pitcher.
