Drunk driver involved in deadly 2002 accident is charged again in Roanoke

ROANOKE COUNTY, VA -

Court records show a drunk driver who was behind the wheel of a deadly accident in 2002 has been charged with DWI once again.

Lynsi Mayes has a court appearance scheduled for May 14th on a DWI second offense.

Roanoke police say she blew a 0.09 after getting pulled over on April 13th.

On May 18, 2002, Mayes, then underage, was drunk behind the wheel when investigators said she took one of those infamous "S" curves too fast and left the road, airborne, before crashing into a tree.

The accident killed her passenger, then 15-year-old Casey Bane, a rising freshman at William Fleming High School.

Mayes spent some time in prison at a state facility in Goochland after the accident.

A judge convicted her on an aggravated involuntary manslaughter charge involving Bane's death.

Court records show what followed was nine years of more run-ins with the law, basically for failing an alcohol test, drunken fighting, and leaving the scene of an accident after totaling her car.

Court records show it took at least three revocations for Mayes to be sent back to prison, 15 months back in 2012.

"We need to make sure the community is safe from [Mayes]," said Casey Bane's half sister, Brandy Bane.

"She's going to continue to [offend] no matter what," Brandy Bane said.

Mayes could get a mandatory 20 day jail sentence if convicted on this latest DWI charge.
