HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. -

The town manager of Holly Springs died Thursday afternoon of an apparent heart attack, a town representative said.

Carl Dean, 56, was pronounced dead at Rex Hospital in Raleigh.

His family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary.

The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Sunrise United Methodist Church in Holly Springs.

Mark Andrews, Public Information Officer for Holly Springs, said Dean collapsed while participating in a golf event sponsored by the Economic Development Department.

Dean served as town manager for Holly Springs for 12 years. He spent the previous 12 years as town manager of Dunn.

"I've known Carl since 1986," Assistant Town Manager Charles Simmons said. "I had the highest degree of respect for him from a professional standpoint. More important, he was a close friend."
