Band Together raises money for Tammy Lynn Center

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Each year, Band Together selects a nonprofit group to help raise money for their cause. This year the organization will help the Tammy Lynn Center for Developmental Disabilities in Raleigh by hosting a concert Saturday at Koka Booth Ampitheatre in Cary.

Lyle Lovett will be the headline act for Band Together. Lovett is well-known to music fans as a singer, composer and actor with a broad career that spans 14 albums.

Band Together hopes to raise $850,000 for the Tammy Lynn Center, and so far have raised more than $800,000.

The Tammy Lynn Center started as a grass roots effort in 1969, when several parents of children with special needs decided they were not satisfied with sending their loved ones away to an institution.

"They knew they couldn't care for their children on their own, but they wanted their children to be a part of their everyday lives," said Sarah Crawford, Director of Development.

Today, nearly 400 families are served by the center. The teachers there focus on each student's ability and not their disability.

The money raised through Band Together will be used to add more technology to classrooms. The center also plans to install inline oxygen to one of their resident buildings and they also plan to expand their early intervention program.

WNCN's Penn Holderness and Page Crawford will be the co-hosts of the event, which also includes Delta Rae, Chatham County Line and the Mac and Juice Quartet.
