ELIZABETHTON, TN (WJHL) -

The Elizabethton Police Department arrested and charged a Butler man with aggravated child abuse and neglect for allegedly harming his 5-week-old infant.

Police say Matthew Clemons, 29, was looking after his child on March 13 after the baby's mother went to work. Officers say around 6 p.m. that day Clemons called 911 and told dispatchers his daughter was having trouble breathing.

Police say emergency crews eventually took the infant to Vanderbilt Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. An officer said it looked like someone inflicted injury upon the child.

Clemons is in the Carter County Detention Center on a $100,000 bond.
