Erica Thomas named Mother of May for taking her sister in after losing dad to cancer

Posted: Updated:

Friday we introduce you to our final nominee for our Mothers of May contest.

Erica Thomas was not able to meet with us because she's by her husband's side in Richmond after he underwent a major surgery this week, but her 17-year-old sister, Elana, she's helping raise wanted to honor Erica by nominating her as a Mother of May.

The two sisters lost their dad back in 2008.

Erica took in Elana and started raiser her with her three other children.

"She's always been my mom.  She's always been there for me and when I moved in, it was just I felt at home just by how she acted and she never made me feel un welcomed," explained Elana.

Erica and Elana have decided to make a difference in their late father's name, raising money for Relay for Life.

This year alone the Thomas family collected $8,000.

The grand prize winner for our Mother's of May contest gets a makeover with the works donated by Zee's Salon.

The makeover includes the winning mother's choice of hair color, style, a manicure, pedicure and whatever else the lucky woman thinks she needs.

Metro has also given a $50 gift card and Southern States has given an English rose bush.
