Two Pitt County residents are behind bars after police said they hired someone to kill two people.

Edelmira Nichols and John Moore appeared in court Monday morning, where they both asked for a public defender.

Friday afternoon, Farmville Police Department, the State Bureau of Investigation, and Fountain Police Department arrested 59-year-old Edelmira Nichols and 66-year-old John Alton Moore of Fountain, N. C. The two were both charged with two counts of attempted first degree murder and two counts of conspiracy to commit murder.

Arrest warrants show the pair attempted to kill Jonalou Moore and Vernon Nichols. Police said Nichols and Moore were planning on killing the two at their job or while they were travelling on business.

Family friends say Vernon Nichols and Jonalou Moore both work at Nichols Tires and Edelmira owns part of the business.

9 On Your Side called Nichols Tires, but they declined to comment on the situation.

Neighbors said the two never did anything out of the ordinary.

"They were normal people, I mean they did the same thing I did every weekend. It was hey bye. They were polite. You would just never think they would do something like that," said former neighbor Jeri Nance.

"I was shocked because they seemed to be very nice people. They passed by here and they would speak and you know say come on and join us walking," said neighbor Kelsey Mix.

Farmville Police said the investigation started in mid-April.

Police said no one was hurt, but the people 9 On Your Side talked with said those potentially targeted are still in shock.

Edelmira Nichols and John Moore's next court appearance is scheduled for May 30th.
