PEARL - Jose Martinez and Edward Salcedo both launched solo home runs as the Mississippi Braves defeated the Huntsville Stars 6-2 Wednesday night to even the series at two games apiece. The rubber match of the series is scheduled for 7:00 PM Thursday.
Mississippi (25-14) scored six runs on seven hits while Huntsville (15-24) plated two runs on eight hits. The M-Braves committed two errors while the Stars made four errors in the game.
Mississippi took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Jose Martinez reached on a force out. Dan Brewer followed with a fly ball to shallow left field. Kentrail Davis and Ozzie Chavez collided trying to make the catch, forcing the ball loose from Davis' glove. Martinez came in to score and Brewer moved to second on the play. Gus Schlosser then singled to left field, driving in Brewer.
Martinez launched his first home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth, extending the M-Braves lead to 3-0. Brewer reached on a error by the third baseman and Barrett Kleinknecht reached on a catcher's interference. Phil Gosselin followed with a double to left field, driving in Brewer. Kleinknecht came in to score on a fielding error by the left fielder to make it a 5-0 game.
Huntsville responded with a run in the top of the fifth. Rene Tosoni doubled and Mike Walker followed with a single to left, putting runners at the corners. Tosoni then came in to score on a Robinzon Diaz ground out.
The M-Braves took a 6-1 lead in the seventh when Salcedo blasted his third home run of the season with a long ball to left field.
Huntsville added a run in the ninth to make it 6-2. Brock Kjeldgaard and Walker reached on back-to-back singles. Diaz followed with a RBI-single to left field.
Gus Schlosser (5-1) went six frames for the M-Braves, giving up one earned run on four hits. He struck out four batters.
Andy Moye (1-5) worked four innings for the Stars. He gave up five runs, one earned run, on three hits and three walks while striking out two.
In Thursday night's series finale, the M-Braves send right-hander Aaron Northcraft (1-2, 4.11) to the mound. He'll counter Stars right-hander Arcenio Leon (0-3, 7.13). First pitch is slated for 7:00 PM. Gates open at 6:00 PM.
