His career was in the grocery business.  But Ed Moore's passion was the  people of the Tri-Cities region.

Long-time Food City employee and community volunteer Ed Moore has died.   News Channel 11 has learned that co-workers found him dead at his home in Kingsport on Thursday.

The cause of his death is unknown, but friends were told he had not been feeling well over the past few days.

Moore's managed Food City grocery stores in Kingsport for many years and most recently trained other managers for K-VA-T Food Stores, the parent company of Food City and the Tri-Cities Region's largest employer.

But it was volunteer work that most defined Moore's life.   The list of charities that turned to him for help is long.   He devoted untold hours and resources to The Santa Train project, a cooperative project between Food City, CSX, and the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce.

"Ed's greatest joy was helping others - especially children," Mayor Dennis Phillips said Thursday night.   "We've lost a real treasure."

Mayor Phillips said Moore was 71 years old.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
