Hillsborough Animal Services offers half price adoptions

Posted: Updated:

For the first time, Hillsborough County Animal Services opened its doors this Memorial Day holiday. The adoption center offered half-priced pet adoptions all weekend long.

"It's a great day to open up," said animal services director, Ian Hallet. "Families are home. Kids are out of school."

The promotion brought out plenty of families looking for a new pet. Michelle Green and her granddaughter, Amani, wanted to adopt a new dog.

"I just lost my dog, unfortunately, and I want to replace her," explained Green.

She quickly fell for a small gray dog named Shadow.

"He's calm and he's pretty, too," she said.

Hallett estimates more than 100 pets found new homes over the past three days. He said events like this one offer some pets a chance at life that they otherwise wouldn't get.

"Towards the end of last week, we actually put a hold on euthanasia, because we knew we'd have a lot of people coming," he said. "So this is an opportunity for a lot of animals who might not normally have gone home to find a new home."

Hallett said Hillsborough County Animals Services may offer half-price adoptions again during the 4th of July holiday.

Melanie and Jeffrey Cornwell should have been getting a tax break for years on part of the homestead property in Dunedin they call their "little piece of Heaven." But due to a mistake at the Pinellas Property Appraiser's Office, they won't see any rebates for previous taxes, just a break on future tax bills.
