Memorial Day observances in Largo

Posted: Updated:
LARGO, FL (WFLA) -

A crowd of about 150, spanning several generations, gathered at the "Military Court of Honor" in Largo Central Park, to honor those who died defending this country.

Flags were raised representing the 5 branches of the armed services.

President Obama noted on this Memorial Day, many young people lack an appreciation for the sacrifices made. A Korean War vet, peace medal recipient, who survived one of the last major battles, agrees. "We come to places like this or parades, we see hats on, flag goes by, no reaction" said P.F.C. Len Godmaire.

But other veterans at this event say just the opposite is true, with a chorus of "thank-you's" as Staff Sgt. John Mac walks in public. But it wasn't always that way, especially right after Vietnam. "So we kind of hid out I think for about two generations at least. It kind of changed about maybe a dozen years ago. I think this generation is great," said Mac.

Another veteran would like to require everyone to serve, even in peacetime, saying it provides discipline and job skills. "Every young man and young woman who is capable and able to serve, to do some type of service whether it be in the reserve or active duty military" said Larry White.

Memorial Day is for looking back, but it can also be a time to reflect on where our nation is going.
