Durham man arrested in scrap yard scheme, kidnapping

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

Authorities in Durham have in custody the man they say stole at least 10 cars over the past few weeks in a scrap yard scheme and was also wanted for a June 7 kidnapping.

Terryon Mceachin, 23, of Durham, turned himself in to the Durham Sheriff's Office Thursday afternoon.

Investigators say the 23-year-old would scope out several neighborhoods in the area looking for cars to steal. Deputies say Mceachin would wait until homeowners would leave, then bring in a tow truck to haul the cars off.

From there, deputies say Mceachin would sell the cars to various scrap yards for about $300 to $400 each.

Almost all of the vehicles deputies say he stole were at least 10 years old. A tricky North Carolina law allowed his "scrap yard scheme" to work.

"If a vehicle is 10 years old or older, no title or proof of ownership is required when selling that vehicle to a scrap yard," explained Deputy Paul Sherwin with the Durham County Sheriff's Office.

Mceachin is being charged with numerous offenses, some of which are from an unrelated case. In total he faces charges of breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, eight counts of obtaining property by false pretense, injury to personal property, eight counts of larceny of a motor vehicle, identity theft, financial card fraud, larceny by employee and two counts of kidnapping.

Deputies say he hired several different tow companies, but those companies are not being charged with any crime.

The scrap yards are not being charged either.

The kidnapping charges stem from an incident that occurred last Friday afternoon on the 900 black of Fayetteville Street in Durham.

A man told officers he stopped to get gas around at 2:15 p.m. on June 7. He left the car running with his two children, ages 4 and 9, inside and went in the store to pay for the gas. When he came back outside, the vehicle had been stolen.

The children were found unharmed a short time later on East Pettigrew Street. The car was found abandoned on Angier Avenue.
