M-Braves Lose Lead, Drop Series Finale to Pensacola

Posted: Updated:

PEARL - The Pensacola Blue Wahoos plated six runs in the final two frames to defeat the Mississippi Braves 7-3 in the series finale at Trustmark Park Tuesday night. The M-Braves fall to second in the South Division standings, a half game behind Mobile with five games remaining in the first half.

Mississippi (35-30) scored three runs on nine hits while Pensacola (24-40) plated seven runs on nine hits. Both teams committed one error. Christian Marrero led the M-Braves offensively with three hits at the plate. Jose Martinez also had two hits.

Pensacola took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Bryson Smith singled and Travis Mattair walked. Tucker Barnhart followed with a single to center, driving home Smith for the game's first run.

The M-Braves responded in the bottom of the second. Marrero led off the frame with a triple to right. Barrett Kleinknecht then delivered a RBI-single to left field, tying the game at 1-1. Jaime Pedroza walked and an errant throw on a pickoff attempt by the catcher allowed Kleinknecht to come around and score, giving the M-Braves a 2-1 lead.

Dan Brewer launched a solo home run to center field in the third, extending the M-Braves lead to 3-1. It was Brewer's first long ball of the season.

Ryan LaMarre walked to start the top of the eighth for Pensacola. Mattair followed with a single to right and Barnhart delivered a RBI-double down the right-field line. Ray Chang followed with a game-tying single to center. Another single to shallow left off the bat of Devin Lohman drove home Barnhart, giving Pensacola a 4-3 lead. Theo Bowe drew a two-out walk to drive in another run and make it 5-3.

Pensacola added two more runs in the top of the ninth to make it 7-3.

Brian Pearl (3-0) tossed a scoreless seventh to pick up the win. Trevor Bell (S, 1) worked the final two frames to notch his first save. Ian Thomas (3-3) surrendered the loss, giving up four earned runs on four hits and a walk in an inning and a third.

Neither starter factored in the decision. Aaron Northcraft limited the Blue Wahoos to one earned run on three hits and four walks while striking out five in five and two-thirds innings for the M-Braves. Josh Smith worked six innings for Pensacola. He gave up three runs, two earned runs, on six hits, a homer and a walk while fanning three batters.

The Mississippi Braves take a day off before starting a five-series against the Tennessee Smokies at Smokies Park in Kodak, TN. Game one of the series is scheduled for Thursday at 6:15 PM CST. Right-hander Cody Martin (3-3, 2.97) toes the rubber for the M-Braves. He'll counter Tennessee righty Alberto Cabrera.
