Mississippi corrections officials are investigating the stabbing death of an inmate at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman.
A news release from the Department of Corrections says prisoner Kelvin Bowen was pronounced dead at the prison hospital Tuesday afternoon. He was 35.
Prison officials say another inmate, a 31-year-old convicted killer named Roderick Roshund Lewis, was identified as the assailant. He was being questioned by investigators.
An unidentified guard suffered a dislocated thumb while trying to break up the two inmates.
Corrections Commissioner Christopher Epps said an investigation so far indicates Lewis had not been strip-searched or properly restrained when the attack occurred in a hallway of a maximum security unit.
A weapon described only as a sharp object was recovered.
