Authorities say a student pilot was killed and his instructor was injured Wednesday when their single-engine plane struck power lines as it was landing at a rural east Mississippi airport.

Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Warren Strain says 57-year-old Rodney Keith Usry of Hickory died, while instructor Tommy Rose of Hickory was airlifted to Jeff Anderson Regional Medical in Meridian. The hospital says Rose is in intensive care.

Usry's body will undergo an autopsy in Jackson.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen says the Cessna 172, registered to the Newton Flying Club, crashed about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Newton County Airport.

Strain says the plane crashed upside-down in a lightly wooded area, with the fuselage and wings intact.

The National Transportation Safety Board was sending investigators to the scene.
