Today, Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (MS-02) introduced H.R. 2326, a bill directing the Secretary of the Department of Interior to review the homestead of Medgar Evers as a precondition to adding this location to the National Park Service system.
"Medgar Evers' commitment and works inspired countless civil rights activists and earned him the brand as a fearless freedom fighter. As we stand at the 50th commemoration of his assassination, I consider the results of this legislation befitting to honor the change Medgar's life had on this nation and the demand for progress his death had on the Civil Rights Movement," said Thompson.
"The Medgar Evers home is a significant memorial to the contributions of the Civil Rights Era. In remembrance and honor of so many who courageously sacrificed their own lives, to better the lives of those who came after them. This marker will stand as a reminder of the great travesties of racial injustice this country has overcome and of the importance of continuing work to end discrimination and ensure equality for all."
