MONTGOMERY COUNTY, VA -

Virginia Tech running back Michael Holmes pleaded guilty to a reduced charge in Montgomery County on Thursday, in connection with a fight that took place in late April.

According to Montgomery County Commonwealth's Attorney Mary Pettitt, the malicious wounding charge was reduced to assault and battery.  Pettitt said the Commonwealth would not be able to prove that Holmes intended to maim or kill Antoine Barnes, during a fight on April 21st in Downtown Blacksburg.

Police say Holmes, his girlfriend Karoline Seekford, and some friends were walking through a parking lot around midnight.  A witness spotted Holmes' ex-girlfriend Ciara Simms, Kierra Barnes, Antoine Barnes, and another woman following Holmes' group.

The witness claims to have seen an argument between Barnes and Holmes, then Simms hit Seekford.  A fight began between the two groups.

The witness said Holmes pulled one of the women off of Seekford, then Antoine Barnes runs up and pushed Holmes.  Holmes then hits Barnes, and kept hitting him until he fell to the ground the witness claims.

"Holmes was justified in coming to the defense of Seekford," Pettitt stated in a news release.  " However he exceeded his right to come to her defense when he continued to hit Barnes after he was no longer attacking anyone."

Pettitt amended the malicious wounding charge against Holmes to assault and battery, and Holmes pled guilty to it.

The judge sentenced Holmes to 12 months in jail, and then suspended the jail time on the condition that Holmes pay $13,403 in restitution, as well as have no contact with Barnes.
