Local school bus driver charged with DUI

Posted: Updated:

Court records show a Carroll County substitute bus driver has been arrested and charged with DUI and reckless driving.

Court papers claim Ricky Lee Phillips was on his way to pick up students from summer school in his bus Friday afternoon when someone called 911 saying he was driving "recklessly."

It didn't take long for a Hillsville police officer to get behind him.

After the officer saw Phillips run off into the shoulder, he pulled him over, court records state.

The officer could smell alcohol on Phillips, the court papers claim.

Phillips later blew a 0.22 on a breathalyzer test.

The test result is in the court file.

The superintendent of the Carroll County school system said Phillips was no longer a substitute driver.

The court has Phillips's driver's license.

Phillips's next court appearance is scheduled for July.
