GREENVILLE, N.C. -

Children in Eastern North Carolina won't have to go far anymore to get the medical care they need.

Vidant Health employees, Governor Pat McCrory and pediatric patients cut the ribbon today on the new "James and Connie Maynard Children's Hospital" at Vidant Medical Center.

The 48-million-dollar project will officially welcome patients Wednesday, bringing an end to two years of construction.

It's the only children's hospital in Eastern North Carolina.

"People in Eastern North Carolina now have a choice to stay here for all their medical care. They won't have to travel to the west part of the state, or even across state lines," said Dr. Ronald Perkin, Co-Medical Director of the hospital.

"Medical health, especially in the rural area of eastern North Carolina is crucial. It's crucial to make sure that we have quality care. It's crucial that we have efficient care. And it's crucial that we also hold down our cost. So building this hospital and trying to prevent sickness, long term sickness, is one of our goals. Because that's better for the children and it's also better for the taxpayers of North Carolina," said the Governor.

There will be an open house for the public from 2-4pm Sunday.
