Wake Co. dance instructor sentenced in child porn case

NEW BERN, N.C. -

A federal district court judge sentenced a man found guilty of possessing child porn in his Wake County home in 2011.

Bruce Arthur Howard, 55, was sentenced to 274 months in prison followed by supervised release for the rest of his life.

Howard worked as a dance instructor in multiple studios including stints in Zebulon, Wilson and Knightdale, according to authorities.

The Justice Department said the SBI began to investigate an individual in Louisburg in August 2011 that was sharing child pornography over the internet. Detectives executed a search warrant on the defendant's house in October 2011. Law enforcement found  numerous images and videos depicting the sexual abuse of prepubescent children and the sadistic abuse of children.

"This case is an excellent illustration of the strong connection between child pornography crimes and the sexual abuse of children," said U.S. Attorney Thomas G. Walker. "Child pornography crimes represent a grave danger, both direct and indirect, to the children in our community. We will continue to make a priority of combating crimes that exploit and abuse children."

According to the North Carolina Department of Corrections, Howard had also been charged with indecent liberties with a minor in Forsyth County in 1987.
