PEARL - Edward Salcedo delivered a bases-clearing triple in the bottom of the fourth to lead the Mississippi Braves to a 4-1 victory over the Birmingham Barons, taking the series three-games-to-two Sunday afternoon. After a five-game road trip to Pensacola, the M-Braves return to Trustmark Park on June 29.
Mississippi (3-2, 41-34) scored four runs on eight hits while Birmingham (2-3, 46-29) plated its only run on five hits. Salcedo led the Braves with two hits and three RBIs. Omar Luna also had a two-hit day in his M-Braves debut.
Birmingham took an early 1-0 lead. Marcus Semien reached on a ground-rule double to start the top of the first. He moved to third on a ground out before coming in to score on a Trayce Thompson ground out to second.
Omar Luna and Jose Martinez led off the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back singles to right field. Christian Marrero then walked to load the bases for a Salcedo bases-clearing triple to the right field corner, putting the M-Braves out front 3-1. Jaime Pedroza followed with a bloop singled over the second baseman's head to drive in Salcedo and make it 4-1.
Aaron Northcraft (3-5) held Birmingham to one earned run on four hits and three walks. He struck out four batters in six innings of work. Andrew Russell (S, 1) came on in the ninth and notched his first save of the season for the M-Braves.
In his first start for the Barons, former M-Brave Michael Nix (0-1) worked five innings. He gave up four earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four batters.
The M-Braves travel to Pensacola for a five-game series against the Blue Wahoos before returning to Trustmark for a five-game homestand Saturday, June 29. M-Braves right-hander Mitch Atkins (1-1, 4.67) toes the rubber in game one at Pensacola. The Blue Wahoos have not announced their starter yet. First pitch is slated for 7:00 PM.
